But your customer's question is: "Which way does the manual say to mount this thing?" The words don't match, so the search function doesn't find anything, and the customer assumes the answer isn't there.

A product FAQ typically requires customers to guess the exact words you used when you answered their question. It's a matching game, and most customers lose.

The Coverage Problem

2. The API Backend

3. The RAG Pipeline

Deployment Patterns

Pattern 1: Embedded Widget (Most Common)

Metrics That Matter

Deflection Rate: % of questions answered without escalation to human support. Target: 60–75% on first message, higher with context.

Response Accuracy: % of answers that don't generate follow-up clarifications. Measure through: direct feedback (thumbs up/down), session length (longer = more clarification needed), escalation rate.

Conversion Impact: In an A/B test, does adding a chat widget increase product page conversion? Target: 3–8% lift is realistic for a well-implemented system.

Customer Satisfaction: CSAT or NPS improvement. Chat widgets typically deliver +5–10 points on NPS because they solve the immediate problem (product information).

Common Failure Modes and How to Avoid Them

The Hallucination Trap: The LLM generates a plausible-sounding answer that's factually wrong. Mitigation: always use context-grounded generation (don't ask the LLM to guess), add explicit instruction "do not make up information," include confidence scores, surface citations so the user can verify.

The Retrieval Miss: The right information exists in your docs but the embedding search doesn't find it. Mitigation: hybrid search (combine BM25 + semantic), re-ranking, test your retrieval on real customer queries, use metadata filtering to reduce noise.

The Irrelevant Answer Problem: The widget answers "how do I install this?" with installation instructions for a different product. Mitigation: robust metadata filtering (tie answers to specific product SKUs), context awareness (if a user is on a product page, bias toward that product), test on ambiguous queries.

The Coverage Expectation: Users ask questions that are genuinely beyond the scope of your knowledge base (engineering consultation questions, questions about third-party products). Mitigation: graceful escalation to human support, be honest in the answer ("I don't have information about that, but our team can help").

The FAQ Page Is Becoming Optional

That's the clearest way to think about this transition. The FAQ page isn't going away because of snobbishness toward old technology — it's going away because a conversational interface is objectively better for the customer's core need: finding the answer to a specific question quickly.

The FAQ page is being replaced by something that answers not the 50 top questions, but all questions that your product knowledge can support. The interface changes from "browse a list and search for keywords" to "ask in natural language." The coverage expands from 50 questions to thousands of possible formulations.
